When Studies Seem To Fail

28 March 2008 By: Marlene11 Comments

I’m getting worried about my brother’s school performance that seemed to be deteriorating. He’s in his freshman year in the university taking up Computer Science course. He had his final exam two days ago and he said if he failed, he would be forced to shift course other than CS, like Information Technology (IT) or Information System (IS). These courses I presumed are all related to computers, but I don’t know the difference. Perhaps he knows.

He was enrolled in IT on the first semester but changed to CS on the second semester for some reasons. Computer Science requires a higher average in the comprehensive exam, which he wished he would pass so he would be retained in that course.

I know he is doing his best in his studies, but it’s disappointing when he changes from one course to another. For one, the tuition is undoubtedly high at his university, then this changing of course is taking him forever before he could graduate. He will find out the result of the comprehensive exam on Monday, then I would probably hire a Tutor for him, whether he fails or not.

He used to have a math tutor in high school and it helped a lot. This time, he seems to be needing badly one again. Hmm. Brother, oh, brother, why can’t you be just like me… 😀

hi marlene! found your blog thru Syura..after reading ur post, i can relate to ur brother ’cause I was changing courses too! first it was A-Levels, but didn’t have enough interest to finish it (to do engineering). then i took a Diploma in IT, managed to finish it. Now I’m doing my final year internship for my Degree in Multimedia, in Labuan, a thousand mile from home. it has been a long journey for me, but I didn’t have any regrets as I finally found the career path I really have an interest in, HR (?)..So not related! but no life path is the same for everybody, we just have to keep on treading to make our own. like my cousin, he dropped out of uni in Aussie at one point (maybe it was his rebellious youth), but now he’s 31, made it as an architect with a newborn son. keep on supporting your brother, and he’ll soon make his own path that you can be proud of..;)

Rafiq, thank you so much for sharing me your experiences in changing courses. At least you didn’t drop out of school, and I will try my best to help my brother so he won’t end as a drop out student. He needs to realize where his interest lies and concentrate with it. He’s turning 18 and at that age, some are still in the process of learning what they really want to be.

You must be the Rafiq Syura has mentioned on one of her post. 🙂

    My,
boys are like that! they can never make up their mind and agree on one. I guess he’s still unsure if he likes/ enjoys doing CS. My sis is also in the CS/ IT line and she’s a lecturer in one of the universities here in Malaysia.

Maybe, if he does well in the exams, that would motivate him to be in the same course and not change. For one thing, CS requires a lot of technical skills such as programming and all the other hardcore computer courses. As for as IT and IS, it’s more of business cum computer science which is not too far from CS, but is lesser technical and less of the very heavy core CS subjects.

I hope he does well in his exams, and don’t worry. I mean, boys ARE LIKE THAT, but believe me, they are the ones who DO WELL later on! Girls struggle but they may not be as smart as the boys (girls are hardworking) but guys are smarter sometimes. 🙂

Where is he in? The Philippines?

      Farah,
My brother is in the Phil. I am hoping he could get a passing grade cos he seems to like the course, compared with IT. Oh, that’s how CS differ from those two courses. No wonder the school requires higher grades to be in that course. My mother is getting worried, too, and she’s beginning to suspect that he’s not doing well in his studies. But when I talk to my brother, he always say everything is ok and that he’s hoping to pass.

Hahaa, I have a cousin who is very quiet and shy that I thought is not smart enough, but now he’s a successful engineer and earns high. Boys outsmart girls in way or another. 🙂

yes Marlene. Maybe your mom is just worried because he doesn’t sit for 4 hours straight and study! 🙂 Girls do that, but not boys. don’t worry, when he says he’ll do well, he WILL!!! 🙂

Mariah Carry can not be like Christina Angulera , Every one has its own personality and individuality, ask him to do whatever his heart says, it’s a long life, he may change his choice three four more time according to me, ask him to keep changing until he find the BEST one which interest him.

This world is materialistic, don’t run for time and money just listen to your heart and do whatever you wanna do in life,

Good try, Shanker. Now, you make me laugh at the “saddest” moment of my…post.

You must be the kindest brother around. Ok, now it’s ok since he changed course for the first time, but 3 or 4 times, I don’t know what I should do. Maybe I should advise him to stop then, hahaa!

I have a nephew (actually Francis’ nephew) who changed course from BS Biology to BS Management last year (first sem). He had to shift because he had a failing grade. And since he studied harder and was able to have a higher average, he shifted back to BS Bio and hopefully maka gradweyt naman sya na yun ang course nya ‘coz he want to be a doctor daw. Yun nga he became an irregular student.

About your brother, for sure naman he’ll be able to pass the exam. I like it when you said ” why can’t you be just like me” hehe!

My brother wants this CS course; considering your nephew’s case, and if my brother fails to get the high average, then maybe he can go back to CS if he tries harder the next time. IT ang course niya nung first sem, then nag CS. Then if he fails this time, malamang nasa IT siya or IS. Thanks for sharing this Amor. I’ll ask my brother if he can do like that if ever ma-fail siya ngayon. Just to give him moral support.

Hehee! kasi when I enrolled in college, my mind was fixed and never thought of changing course. Although there were times I wanted Journalism or Guidance Counselling, but the thought wasn’t so intense though.
