The final week for schools has been over and tomorrow starts the students’ anticipation of a long summer vacation. It wasn’t the warmest of weather when the students normally sing songs of summer, welcoming its presence with ice creams, flowers and party at the school’s garden. I basically prepare this day with something native to Filipinos, nonetheless always take this opportunity to introduce some Filipino delicacies. Sometimes I’m lucky to find puto, suman or hopia at the Asian grocery. Sometimes there’s nothing but all Chinese and Thai products. A week before, I went to the Asian store to find some Filipino pastries or fruits to bring to my students. But I was desperate to find any. I looked for anything similar to Filipino natives and found nothing but this one:
Durian flavored wafers
It wasn’t the wafers itself that I’m after to but the flavor and that fruit on the label. Most of my students haven’t seen durian nor tasted it, even so how it would smell. I love Durian and I have no qualms about it smell. The fact that Durian grows abundantly in some places in the Philippines is something I could tell the students about. It could have been better if I had the real fruit but it might end up disastrous considering the smell. I wouldn’t know how they could tolerate the smell.
As I’ve said, I bought it a week before the schools’ final closing week, I placed the plastic bag in the walk in closet and forgot about it for a day or two. Everytime I went in that little room I could smell something and couldn’t think what it was. Not until I noticed the plastic bag that I thought it was the wafers. So I placed it in the pantry cabinet and stored it there for a couple of days. Having missed Durian for years, I couldn’t help but open the pack and wolfed down two or three pieces of wafers. I could have eaten up the whole pack but I couldn’t take the smell longer. It smelled like the real Durian but geezz how terrible, I tried to pinch my nose hard to avoid smelling while chewing another piece. At that moment I realized I like the real Durian but not when it is flavored to food such as this wafers. Then I recalled I didn’t like Durian candies and how I also disliked Durian in cakes and pastries. But I couldn’t resist craving for Durian after missing it for a long time so…
The more it smelled when the pack was opened and it smelled up the pantry like a rat was trapped inside and died to rot. I knew hubby hated Durian and its smell but I had no other place to hide it. Everytime he opened the pantry cabinet I pray to God he wouldn’t notice the smell or I would find it in the bin, lol! I was glad he didn’t smell anything until I brought it to my students last week. As expected, not everybody liked the smell. Most of them didn’t take a second piece and I knew exactly why. Guess if we finished the whole pack; not even that day helped me to get rid of it. Hubby picked me up after school so I had no chance to throw it somewhere but to bring it home again. Now it’s in the hallway, wrapped tightly so the smell will not spread. The rain yesterday made me so lazy to throw it to the large bin outside so it’s still there waiting to be disposed of. I feel sorry for this wafers really, but it’s the smell I can’t stand.
And hubby dear, if you happen to read this post ( as you always do), go find the wafers and you may do whatever you want with it cos now I understand why you hate that Durian smell, I promise I will not sulk like I used to do when I’m upset, lol!

Same here. I can only eat durians in its original form. The same goes for mangoes too …

Fresh is always better than artificial flavor. I can eat Durian as much as I can. I haven’t tried pastries with mango flavor though.

I actually like Durian and the smell, but not in this wafers. It seems a little over smelly than the fresh ones.

Most westerners dislike the smell of durian. On the other hand, I love it smells as long as the smell does not confined to a small room.

Willie, I agree, my husband for one hates it.
It must smell terrible though if the room is closed. 🙂
Thanks for visiting. I really appreciate it.

Those wafers look pretty good actually. I am a huge wafer fan and am always looking to try different flavors. I have heard of the durian fruit and how it tastes good but smells horrible. It’s a darn shame. Haha it was funny reading about how much your husband hated the smell, and you were worried he would notice! It seems like those wafers are never disappearing.

Hi Randy, thanks for dropping by.
Yeah, durian is like heaven and hell in one place. I love the taste and smell of the real fruit, but not in this wafers. Hubby, on the other hand, hates both the fruit and the smell.
Amor says
I haven’t eaten durian but I would want to try. Pag may nakita ako sa supermarket, subukan ko kaya.

Amor, ganun ba? Pero di ko rin alam kung saan merong durian sa kamaynilaan. Kasi maraming taga-maynila na pumupuntang davao para bumili lang ng durian. Once, pinagbawal nga daw sa isang shipping lines, sabi ni Leif. 🙂

At first it was so yucky for me but later on I like the taste especially if it’s fresh from the tree.
Marlene says
Joy, masarap talaga ang Durian lalo kapag medyo makapal ang meat nito, hmmm, creamy!
