IWD And Barbie
I’ve learned from my morning newspaper yesterday that the International Women’s Day had come to it’s 99th year of celebration. I shunned the idea of writing about it since I knew that post on this matter would surge in the blogsphere. While I was dropping back my EC, I was surprised that only one post on Women’s Day I happened to read. Not that I didn’t drop to a hundred blogs but it was like 1 out of 40. Where had all the women gone yesterday? Who would know. I definitely knew that I wasn’t on the road to express my vital role in the society but I appreciate those who were actively engaged in commemorating the IWD.
As I continued to flip over the pages of the newspaper, I came across an article about a familiar doll usually played by girls. It’s Barbie Doll turning 50 today. Just a day after the Women’s Day. Gosh! I didn’t know this popular doll is older than I am, yet, looking younger than I do. Nevertheless I don’t wish to be a doll. Dubbed as one of the most influential people who never lived (USA Today), this fashion doll has survived critics and mockeries due to its overly adult appearance. Barbie has continued to impress the small girls around the world and look how far she’d come today. Barbara Millicent Roberts otherwise known as Barbie is turning 50 today. I, myself, did not play any Barbie doll when I was a little girl as its existence wasn’t known to me then. Instead, I used to play paper dolls resembling Barbie. 
This song prompted the creator of Barbie to file lawsuit against the recording company for using the color of the logo and inappropriate lyrics. But the favor went to the song as it was protected as a parody stated in a certain constitution.
The Essence Of A Woman
It’s International Women’s Day and women around the world are getting distinct attention by commemorating historical events that led to the celebration of Women’s Day. Though the celebration was associated with political awareness, it’s now becoming an occasion to express the significance of women in the society in general – mothers, teachers, girlfriends, aunts and more. In some countries, the custom of giving gifts and flowers to women on this day is still prevalent.
The only inspiring quote on women that comes to my mind is, “Behind every man’s success is a woman”, and for whatever reason a woman contributes the success of a man is certainly substantial. But the true essence of a woman is of her dignity and pride being a wife and a mother, her role in the family is greater than a man’s conquest.
Incidentally, today is also the birthday of my bestfriend, Nona. Our friendship has blossomed into a sister-like relationship when we were in the third grade. We’ve been used to long distance contacts since we graduated high school, that everytime we meet, tears flows and long talks would lead us to memory lane. The picture below was taken last year after not having seen each other for almost eight years.
