Thriller Novel Trailer – Evil at Heart

My boss would always remind us to read a good book everytime we end work for a long break.  I’ve heard her parting words many times and everytime I do, I naughtily grimace because in the back of my mind is a question like, would she say it’s a good book if I say I read thriller novels?  Because to me it is.  Although I read books in different genres, the pull of thriller or crime novels has been so intense since I started to read one.  As a matter of fact, I’m hooked into finishing my thriller novel now which I started reading a few days ago.  And as fall is drawing near,  I’m up into finding another book to read under my quilt in dark, autumn nights.

I’m not a physical bookshop shopper actually.  I rely the internet to search for the latest novels around, which one is worth reading and who the author is.  Most of the time, I go for upcoming novels of the authors I adore.  And just in time for fall release, Chelsea Cain, the same author who wrote Heartsick and Sweetheart, is filling the bookshops with another thriller novel, Evil at Heart on the 1st of September.  I also read the reviews of the book in question which help give me a more elaborative synopsis of the book.  To my satisfaction, Evil at Heart has already been reviewed by publishers weekly.

Starred Review by publishers weekly:

In Cain’s superb follow-up to Heartsick, damaged detective Archie Sheridan is back home in Portland, Ore., trying to resume a normal life. Archie’s ties to serial killer Gretchen Lowell still run deep, even if he’s stopped their weekly visits in prison. Meanwhile, reporter Susan Ward is finishing an article accusing a beloved U.S. senator of seducing his children’s 14-year-old babysitter a decade earlier. When three bodies are discovered in a local park—where Archie’s team found Gretchen’s first victim 12 years earlier—Archie worries another serial killer is at large. After the senator’s unexpected death, Susan discovers links between the sex scandal and the bodies in the park. When Gretchen escapes from prison, Archie knows he’s the only one who can stop her from killing. In Cain’s capable hands, Gretchen is both a monster and the only person who truly understands Archie’s pain. With its brisk pacing, carefully metered violence and tortured hero, Cain’s sophomore effort will leave readers desperate for more.”

Now, there is no reason for me not to buy this book because the trailer below justifies how novel thriller can give me creeps while reading and engaging my thoughts in every details described and telling me not to stop. Chelsea Cain can (again) be one of the hot authors for fall with her upcoming release, Evil at Heart.

Gotta Watch This Film

Angels and DemonsI can’t wait to watch “Angels and Demons”, a film based on the novel by Dan Brown, the same author of The Da Vinci Code.  I’ve been waiting for this after I read the book about a year ago.  Today is the  premiere showing of the film but I can’t go watch it cos it will be late in the night and I need to be early for work the next day.  The sleepy head in me has a hard time getting up in the morning.  Anyhow, this film seems less controversial than that of the Da Vinci Code despite the involvement of the Vatican City and religious personalities in the story.  I remember the Da Vinci Code was banned in the Philippines and pulled up from theatres after a day’s showing.  I didn’t know if the ban was revoked later or something.  I’ve watched that film and I should say I didn’t become less Catholic after that.  I hope this will not be the case for the ”Angels and Demons”.  Nonetheless, the actor, Tom Hanks hasn’t been a disappointment when it comes to movies like this.

I told hubby I wanted to see this movie with him since he also had read the book.  But it’s quite a problem for me cos he doesn’t like going to movies.  As a matter of fact, we haven’t gone to movie theatres together since time immemorial, hehee.  He’d rather wait for the film on dvd.  How can I persuade him to go with me.  I was thinking it would be my chance to watch a film at the VIP lounge of the three year-old movie theatre (Bergakungen).  I went to this theatre once with my friend but we took the ordinary lounge.  The VIP costs more than the usual lounge.  I heard that the lounge has it’s own bar where the guests can sit and enjoy some drinks and snacks an hour before the show.  And that one sits comfortably on a leather armchair inside the movie room or whatever it’s called.  Anyway, it’s fully-booked for today’s premiere.  I still have to convince hubby to come with me perhaps on the weekend.

Let The Right One In

You, too, the wrong one, c’mon in!

Hubby told me months ago he wanted to read the book, “Låt den rätte komma in” before he would watch the film.  The book and the film were in Swedish but I told him it seemed not familiar to me.  Even the movie which was shown in October last year didn’t ring a bell or so.  How would I know, otherwise, when as far I can remember, I’d gone to a movie house just once last year when me and my friend watched Mama Mia, the movie.

When he told me further that the film (Låt den rätte komma in) has claimed international recognitions and it’s still been showing in theatres abroad  I got interested to buy the book which I did.  Foremostly for hubby’s sake who wanted to read it.  He reads faster than I do so I waited till he’s done.  He asked me if I wanted him to tell the story but I refused.  I’ve been reading it for nights now.  I can read faster during summer when I stay at home a lot.  The book is in Swedish but it has translated to several languages already.  Hubby and I usually prefer to read books in English if it’s written by an English or American author, and Swedish if the author is a Swede.  Don’t ask about Filipino books and authors cos I can’t find any here.

Let the right one in The story is about a boy who is the target of bully at his school and later becomes a friend of a girl vampire.  This is the first time I read a horror novel and I can tell that I’m not the least scared while reading the book.  With all the blood sucking and neck biting and blood squirting everywhere,  I didn’t have sleepless nights so far.  Unlike when I watch a horror film I could skip a horrifying scene by closing my eyes, hiding my face behind hubby’s shoulder, sometimes making a fetus-like position in the soffa.  I couldn’t do all these while reading or I couldn’t read the details at all.  I guess this is where the difference lies, between a horror novel and a horror film and I tend to be scared of horror films.  Nonetheless, the book is far way better with some implicit details than in films so I don’t regret reading this book even if it fails to scare me.

I have seen the international trailer somewhere in the net and it seemed spooky to me.  I wikiquote, “The American version is called Let Me In because the publishers requested that Lindqvist change the title as they believed it was too long” (to be released in 2010).  But the title “Let The Right One In” in English subtitle is still showing in theatres.  As for me and hubby, we’ll get the DVD film of this which I learned was out in stores starting this month.  It would be a night of spooky film in springtime.
