Taking A Break From Teaching

I wished I could take a break from teaching without compromising my job as a teacher. You might be wondering how on earth could I do it. To quit working would be the only way to make my wish would come true. But it was not the way. Part of my job is tutoring or giving study assistance to Filipino students who have just arrived here. This is the kind of teaching job I want to be working on. While teaching Filipino should be in a group of students, tutoring is one-on-one instruction.

I did my last performance in teaching this week with the new teacher who will replace me. She will be starting to take over my classes next week. And I will be having more students to help soon. I’m grateful I have this kind of opportunity to switch my job. Both are related to teaching but to be carried out in different ways.

The reason why I needed to take sometime off from teaching was to get lighter loads and quality of performance. I find it challenging to extend study assistance to new students and help them adjust to the new environment. And when the time comes that they don’t need me anymore, I feel I have accomplished my job.

Taking Notes With A Camera

My job requires me to participate in career development trainings and seminars and listen to lectures of competent speakers. Most of the time, I take down notes in my notebook so as not to miss valuable insights. I used to take notes on a piece of paper before but I would lost and completely forget about it. Now I have a special notebook for taking notes and I always have it with me everytime I go to trainings and seminars. It’s seemingly good to have all my notes in one place and read them over and over.

In one of our career development lectures, I got tired of taking notes because it was too much and I couldn’t concentrate on listening to the speaker. So I grabbed my camera ( lucky, I had it with me that day) and started taking pictures of the powerpoint presentation of the speaker. Of course, I deactivated the flash so that it would not distract the audience and most especially the speaker. I zoomed in and tried to get the whole of the presentation itself so that the text would be readable. And I was really pleased to see how clear they were when I uploaded the photos in my computer.

My colleagues who were sitting near me wanted to see the pics and some of them tried to copy what they missed. I took 21 presentation pics from that lecture and it saved me a helluva laborious writing.

Happy World Teachers’ Day!

Would you believe that the first time I heard about World Teachers’ Day was at our regular teachers’ meeting a few weeks ago. I scribbled it on my daily planner so I could remember to observe the event in schools. I’ve been working as a teacher for five years here but I’ve not seen schools celebrating World Teachers’ Day. I do recall celebrating Teachers’ Day in Davao where I also worked as a teacher, but we usually celebrate it on Valentine’s Day. I searched the internet about this event and I was amazed to learn that World Teachers’ Day has been held since 1994. Unfortunately, I haven’t heard of this event until this year. Shame on me!

It seemed not all schools here are aware of this or they might just have been too busy to even think of celebrating World Teachers’ Day. I went to school as normal but all were in their classes. No gatherings or programme installed for the day. Anyway, that’s how engaged the teachers are to their work, so it’s fairly forgivable if they forgot this day. But for me who remembered it, I did a photographic flashback of all the years I spent with my students and colleagues.
