I bet some of you are going back to work today with reluctance. I, on the other hand, being a teacher, am having a holiday break for about three weeks. It’s indeed gratifying to have such a benefit. But for other line of work, today is just a normal day, though not really if it’s a day after Christmas Day. Well, lucky for those who are celebrating Boxing Day because it’s still a holiday. At least here in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe celebrate this day as a non-working holiday.

I haven’t heard of Boxing Day until a student mentioned it last week. I’ve been accustomed to what it’s called in the Swedish calendar, Annanday Jul, which can be translated as Second Day Christmas. I was confused why it was called Boxing Day, I thought it had something to do with boxing, you know, fighting. Hubby couldn’t tell me either what it meant. All he knew was the 26th of December is a holiday.

Gladly, hubby showed me an article in a newspaper this morning that explained what Boxing Day was all about. I was enlightened after reading it. The word ”boxing” doesn’t mean the punching but comes from the word “box”. Hahaa! How did I miss it? I think it’s easy to associate “boxing” with fighting than with wrapping or packaging. Do you have lots of leftover from your Christmas dinner? Box them and share to the needy, then you will have Boxing Day. It’s what it’s all about. Though in the old times, it was about the rich boxing and giving leftovers and gifts to the workers or servants.

Happy Boxing Day!

These blue lights in the city remind me of holiday seasons when they’re being lit, normally on the first week of December. Just thinking about it is a stress. Not only the gift-hunting that’s nerve-racking but the pressure of preparing for holiday meals and treat as well. Ugh! And oh, please be nice to my image below. I know it’s badly taken. You know, even taking this picture was a stress, lol!

Are you busy, too, preparing for holidays? I felt the stress when I was at the mall looking for gifts the other day. Then it seemed it was not enough so I had to go and find more gifts again yesterday. I’ve just wished to give a token of friendship to my three colleagues but it seemed as though I was hunting for gifts to ten people. It always takes time to find something valuable but inexpensive.

We’re celebrating Santa Lucia day tomorrow, though it’s not a holiday the schools and offices have their own way of showing high regard on this day. Special hot drinks called glögg, ginger cookies, a bun called lussekatt are traditionally prepared on the table. In the city, the search is on for this year’s Lucia. Some schools take their students to the church to express a solemn observation.

There’s no Santa Lucia church here but in Syracuse (Italy), where Lucia is the patron saint of the city, the Santa Lucia Church is a must-visit on the day of the celebration. It is said that Lucia was buried in the church but we could not get in to see her tomb with our own eyes because it was closed then. We came a few days after the observance of Lucia Day ( December 13). We saw it in an Italian newspaper that this place was packed with people. But quite empty when we arrived.

That’s hubby looking closely to the church, hoping the door would be opened long enough to let us in. With hopes in vain, we just satisfied ourselves by taking pics, posing and staring at the church.

Oh, I do remember why we couldn’t get in the church. It was lunchtime and everything is normally closed in Italy from 1 p.m to 3 p.m. I also recall that hubby was in a hurry to find a restaurant, afraid we would miss lunch and wait for dinnertime at 8 p.m. Anyway, have a peaceful Santa Lucia Day!

I was wondering what the oil candles were for when I saw them lighted in broad daylight a week ago. When my friends and I passed by the Domkyrkan, we stopped and looked around the church premises and admired these lights on the ground. A woman approached us and showed us some pink ribbon products. Then I realized it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), thus, the light manifestation was for at Domkyrkan.

I got a call for a mammogram a few months ago but I cancelled it in favor of my job. I had a record of breast consultation and mammogram when I noticed a lump in my right breast. It was the time I learned about water cysts when the doctor said what the lump was. It was removed by inserting a thin needle in the lump and extract the water. Since then, I would get a schedule for mammograph every other year. I know I shouldn’t have ignored the call even though it was treated and removed. I can never be so sure. I’ll make sure not to miss my mammogram next time.

It felt like we had real summer weather past weekend so we took the time to go out. This used to be hubby’s favorite place for lunch when he was young but he said it has changed a lot since then. We both don’t play golf, though I wish I could, but I’d rather not cos I’m afraid I’d hit the grass more than the ball.

“Have you seen Google’s banner today?”, asked hubby when he opened his browser. I tried to sneak-a-peek into his computer from where I stood but I couldn’t see clearly what it was so I came closer and saw this colorful banner of Google. It was representing the 160th-Year Anniversary of The World Expo since its conception on May 1, 1851 in London.

Google's World Expo Anniversary Banner

I first knew about World Expo when the blog I frequently visited before posted photos of the celebration held in Shanghai, China last year. It was amazing and the photos were gleaming with colors and magnificent architectures, I truly admired all of them. I though it would only take place in China yearly. But I learned today that World Expo is organized and conducted in different places. Though it’s celebrating its 160th Year Anniversary this year, the next expo will not be until 2012 in South Korea.

I was wondering when it would take place here in Sweden but unfortunately, it was stated it would be in 2020, if things would go well to pursue the plan. Hubby said the first expo here was in 1923. He wasn’t born yet that time, not even his mother. World Expo in 2015 will be in Milano, Italy. While reading what it was about, I realized it would be a great opportunity to see different parts of the world and their works of art and crafts, from industry to technology. And not only that, it’s both educative and entertaining, too.

For once in your life, you must have done something for love. Probably not just once but many times. I don’t want to sound sentimental or pathetic on this post just because it’s Valentine’s Day. I admit that I’ve done something for love, too. Who haven’t? What we do for love can go wrong sometimes. But it’s just to remind us that “hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs” – Proverbs 10:12

I have nothing more to share to you this day but a song which lyrics can be interpreted in different ways. It sounds melancholic but she sings it with all sweet smiles on her face. I thought at first it’s about doing something good for love but why, oh, why he’s going to leave her. What did she do for love, anyway? Just listen.

Anyhow, she sings it with glamour. She’s one of my favorite Swedish artists and this song is one of the finalist in last year’s Song Festival (or Song Constest). The winner would compete for the Eurovision Song Contest. She didn’t make it to the top though.
