Not A Mushroom-Picker Expert

6 October 2008 By: Marlene14 Comments

Mushroom
Poisonous or suspect mushroom

When fall season begins, mushrooms pop-up everywhere sticking and crying out to be picked.  Lucky for those mushroom pickers when they find a secret place in the woods for they will surely come home with their baskets full.  Hubby does not fancy mushroom, he thinks it’s kind of bleh!  But I like the button mushrooms fried with other vegies.  Besides, it’s the only mushroom I can identify whenever I stumble one.  I wouldn’t dare pick strange looking mushrooms cos I know some of them are poisonous.

My mother hadn’t served mushroom dishes on our dining table. I don’t know, but she mustn’t like it, or mushrooms are not prevalent in Davao. But I do remember we had a neighbor who used to cultivate mushrooms for a living. But having mushrooms for dinner wasn’t at all pleasing. When I was little, I thought mushrooms were dog pee, that wherever dogs peed there it grew. Silly thought…

Hi Bombchell, thanks for dropping by. Stories might be scary but mushrooms are not what we thought they are. I’m scared to pick the poisonous ones though, so I prefer the grocery, too. 🙂

    Mhy,

Mushrooms with flat tops are usually poisonous. The edible varieties of mushrooms are those with round tops. We have plenty of mushrooms here in Ilocos Norte and edible ones are usually found in forests and mountainsides. It’s difficult to gather them that is why they are sold at high prices.

Jess, now I know that flat tops are poisonous, I didn’t know this before. And yes, the button mushrooms I like, have round tops. To think that our forests and mountains are located in far-flung areas, too.

        Mhy,

Korek! That is why gathering mushrooms is a risky job because edible mushrooms usually grow during the wet season in the Philippines. I even experienced having bitten by a snake and fell from a 20-foot cliff gathering mushrooms. Maybe it was sheer luck that I’m still alive today and commenting again on this post 🙂

Farah, that is not edible. For me, it looks like poohs. I seldom eat mushroom, too cos Leif doesn’t like it. But his mother usually add some to a sauce.
