Imagine yourself to have been living in a house for 30 years and you have equipped it with things you consider valuable. You and your family has developed memories from children’s childhood to birthdays and anniversaries, until your children has moved out and started to build a family of their own. Time has come that you have to move out from that house under the circumstances. I am talking about my mother-in-law who has just moved to another house smaller than the previous one. Actually, it’s ironic to say small when the area of the house is 110 sq m for a lone dweller. Her husband has been living in the home for the aged for almost two years now.
The momentous decision to move out was probably the hardest, painful resolution she has ever made. That she could no longer take care of the big house due to dominating old age has overweighed all the reasons considered.
So came the strenuous packing, sorting, throwing away of unnecessary stuffs like marmelade jars and more. Helping her was more than fun for I’d seen how she’d collected things that had passed from one generation to another. From the kettle she got from her mother to the smallest pieces of plastic bags. It took four months to get all the things transported to the new house.
With the help of my hubby and his brother, she has almost done getting all in places. She’s done it in her time without urgency. It’s her first spring in the new home interior and surroundings and I think she deserves a break now that the strenuous part is over. Just in time for springtime, she needs this Hartman Garden Furniture in her little garden to sit comfortably while having her coffee time. I can’t wait to have barbecue in her new garden, as we used to do in the previous place.

My MIL live alone in a big house now and her daughter kept advice her to move into a small house but she seems doesn’t like the idea. i think everyone would miss the memories at their old house this is because it is full of sentimental values.BBQ in spring time is a good idea 🙂
Marlene says
Your MIL has a strong will to preserve the memories of the house. Surely, they’re the ones holding her back to sell the house. Oh, I wish we could have barbecue now, Sweetiepie.

It is ironic reading about moving, I was just tonight thinking of all my moves, and how I was looking forward to moving for one last time.
It is sad to leave the familiarity of things we’ve become accustomed to, but thankfully she has you her family around her which will make it much easier.
Marlene says
Ada, there is always some reasons why we have to move even if we don’t want. I couldn’t count the times anymore we moved when I was young.
Yes, she is lucky to have four sons who could help her in times like this.

Oh, i can totally imagine moving out from a place where your heart is. We’ve been living in our house now for 32 years- my parents house of course, and I cannot imagine getting the house sold out for any reasons. It’s like every corner of the house lies some memories, mostly childhood memories, the good and bad old days, the striving and everything else. it’s like the house is your life journal and your life memorabilia!
Anyway, hope you MIL is all set and will settle in her new home pretty soon. Maybe, a smaller house is what she needs afterall. easier to maintain and safer for her in a way.
Marlene says
Farah, it will not be easy to move from that house. I have never known anyone who have lived so long in one place but you.
I wish she’d moved to a smaller house, but she likes to have big space to move around, though.
You got me! I was thinking of linking you up in my blogroll, too. Thanks a lot!
farah says
I’d like to add you in my blogroll. will be easier for be to visit you. 🙂

When I moved out of my childhood home, most of my memories were left behind. And the worse thing is I don’t have anything left that would remind me of that time except what’s ingrained in my memories …
Marlene says
Nick, your mother probably has kept anything memorable from your childhood home. Memories keep in mind are enough to look back on.
Joy says
Hi..Just dropping by from Jessie’s page
Joy says
I know how you feel..We just moved out too from Phils to Aussie and it’s not really that easy. Words are not enough to explain but chances and opportunities keep coming back so it ‘s time to grab it. Now we’re here and living for almost three months. Still under the stage of adjustments especially the kiddos.
Marlene says
Hi Joy, welcome to my site. I thought it was my province mate who’s name is joy, too.
Three months isn’t long yet to have been living in a new place. It must be hard for you and your kids. I remember my first 3 months here. Hope everything will be fine with you and your family.
penpusher says
I totally agree!
Moving out is way more strenuous than exercising. In the past 5 years I had moved 4 times, the packing of things and the guilt of realising how much junk you’ve hoarded is an exercise unto the mind itself 😉
Thanks for dropping by again 🙂
Have a great weekend!
Marlene says
That’s tiring, pen, moving almost every year is a heck of a job. Hope you stay in your place now for good.
Farah says
My, yes, my parents moved in here when my older sis was 3 months old, and she will be 32 this year! so, we’ve had this house now for 32 years! pretty long huh? 🙂
Marlene says
Farah, you and your sister are lucky to have been living in the same place since you were small.
Amor says
Moving out from a house were you spent almost half of your life is very hard.
When I was in highschool and college, we lived in a big house with 8 rooms somewhere in QC. The rooms were rented by different families. The chinese owner/friend entrusted my aunt and made her the landlady, pinatira sya dun para siya na yung maniningil sa rent, pati na sa rent ng iba pang properties nung friend nya. Kaya kami nakatira dun without paying anything, kami pa nga ang binibigyan ng sack of rice, pati sugar, monthly. The room where my aunt stays were actually given to her na, although verbal lang. But when my aunt’s friend died of cancer, her husband who became addicted to different vices sold the house and all other properties. So we had no choice but to move out of that house syempre. I had so many good memories there, we were all sad, teary eyed when we left the place. Huhuhu. 🙂 Kapitbahay pa naman namin dun si Tonton Gutierrez, haha!
Marlene says
Amor, i can tell that your aunt is a very nice person that her entrusted her as the landlady. Sayang naman at napunta sa ibang kamay, but it was an uncontrollable situation. Ayy, ganun! Buti ka pa nagkaroon na ng kapitbahay na artista, at si Tonton pa. Guwapong-guwapo talaga ako sa artistang yan, hehe..
Amor says
I have a piktyur with him Marlene, kaso it’s so dyahe to show off kasi I look like his tsimi-aa… hahah! Kaya ayun, mega tago ko sa baul. 😀
Shanker Bakshi says
I know it’s very hard to move out from a place where you live in for years, and lots of memories attached to it. It happened with me huuuuum three times , once when I was in school and dad retired from his service, second when we buy our own house and third when I move out from that small town to this big and beautiful city chandigarh, where am working hard to make my dream come true.
Shanker Bakshi says
Marlene you moved out to a diffrent countiry with diffrent culture and rituals, probably you miss your home town a lot.
Marlene says
Yes, I do, Shanker. I’ve been living here for more than 8 years now and I went home just twice yet. I hope I can see my home town again next year. 🙂
