One of the advantages of working in a multicultural environment is the opportunity to learn about the diverse cultures around you. As a mother-tongue teacher, I have had colleagues from various countries who bring with them rich and fascinating cultural backgrounds. During special occasions, some of my colleagues would show off their food culture, which I absolutely find enjoyable and informative. It is through this that I’ve learned about the Biryani dish.

My colleague who’s from Afghanistan was the one who cooked us this delightful dish. But I must say she is one phenomenal cook and she is capable of preparing several meals at once. I looked into it more after learning its name and discovered that biryani is usually Indian, Pakistani, and even Iraqi. However, those varieties are really spicy. This Afghani Biryani was not spicy at all and I loved it!

I’ve wanted to learn how to cook it, though I’m not a wizard in the kitchen. I have never even cooked any basmati rice 😃. But in my mind, I know I can make it. I just have to find the right ingredients.

I haven’t tried any spicy biryani, but I would prefer the non-spicy one. The most common I’ve seen online, which I can also order if I want, is the Indian Biryani.
