The CoronaVirus pandemic changed how people work, relate and even handle their daily lives. With the need to exercise social distancing, it was safer for companies to close some of their operations or let their employees work remotely. One of the lines of works affected by the situation is being a teacher. Although I have been dealing with blended working for three months now, I’m still in the process of adapting to the new normal.
Those who were lucky enough to keep their jobs had to work from home, something not many had done before. It came with confusion and setbacks, but it was better than the predicament 25% of the global population that lost its livelihood was experiencing. How do you work, remain productive and sane when working from home?
Have a Working Schedule
Your needs are unique, and it’s essential to consider them before creating a work schedule. Someone who has very young kids may not have the same work schedule as a coworker who has teenagers or lives alone.
When are you most motivated and productive, or when do you have fewer interruptions. Probably it’s when the kids are asleep or very early in the morning when you are fresh and less tired.

You may have to test different working schedules until you come up with a suitable one. Also, be flexible. Somedays, you’ll want to sleep in and catch up with work later on in the day or at night when everyone is sleeping.
Create a Balance
Because most of your family will be at home, it’s essential to take advantage of this period to bond and do things together. It’s a time to get to know each other better, create fun activities and stay safe. For this to happen, you need to have family time.
If you spend most of your time working, your family will feel neglected. Finish your office work early, then dedicate the rest of the day to your family. Young kids will want to play with you, read stories together or help with schoolwork, while older ones will be happy to chat and share meals with you.
As much as your family needs you, don’t forget to create your time. Use the time to exercise, rest, meditate or catch up with friends or a partner. Most importantly, sleep well and eat healthy foods.
Create a Healthy Workplace
You may have to transform one of your rooms into a workstation or if you don’t have enough space, work from a corner of your bedroom, lounge or any other appropriate area. Ensure the home office is well equipped with all the necessary equipment and modify it to your liking.
You should feel comfortable, relaxed and motivated in your workstation, which means making sure you have more natural light coming in, less noise and calm colours to keep your mind relaxed.
To keep you productive, let your family understand the need to give you uninterrupted time when working. If you have young children, have someone take care of them when working, which sometimes means hiring an assistant or working in shifts with your partner.
With time, you’ll develop an excellent arrangement that will boost your productivity without compromising on your health and family time.
