Having Fun Learning By Doing

29 June 2008 By: Marlene10 Comments

When I’m not having any problem with my time, I could spend hours sitting in front of my computer, that sometimes I find myself staring at the monitor, thinking about what to do next. After staring for, like two minutes, I realized I need to upgrade my version of WordPress, thanks to the WP files folder icon in my desktop. So I downloaded the latest upgrade (2.5.1) and installed it in my local WordPress. And the fun have just began! I was surprised to see the difference between the old and new. I was almost lost when I tried to upload an image, lol! But after running my eyes through the whole page, I found the way to do it.

One thing that WordPress has done to me is the fun of changing themes. I am not an expert at creating a website, although I wish I were. And I wish I could create my own theme someday. I did start, by following some tutorials I found in the net but gods only know when it will be done. So far, it’s still a dummy of text, lacking illustrations and more. But I let it wait for a while or forever. When I feel bored with my theme, as I always do, I just depend on some existing theme and start destroying it, as if it were my own, hahaa!

I’ve never talked about this theme I have which I’ve been using for 4-5 months now. This Photoshopfox theme has the built-in features like adsense, social networking and sitemap. The comments template is also gravatar-ready. It wasn’t difficult to find the elements I want to modify in the css file cos it’s well-organized, it’s where I usually do most of the editing. When I modified this theme, I learned that I could add or remove objects in the sidebar template without the hassle of going into the widgets panel in WordPress. So I skipped logging into my WordPress when I would want to add something in my sidebar. I might do this, too with my next theme. It’s easier for me to look directly into the template and insert the code whenever I want. But this, of course, needs uploading the sidebar template to your site whenever you remove or add an object. Another thing is my desire to learn how to get different objects in the sidebar when I click on the different pages on my site, I finally get to know how to do it by searching the net. I will disclose my sources in the coming days.

When I upload the laterst version of WP, I will also change my theme, just like when I upgraded the previous version. Don’t be misled by my “learning by doing” attitude. I just find it fun and challenging.

It really is fun learning. I wish I have a WordPress book of codes that I can read when I’m offline, haha. For now, all I do is bookmark a certain site, then copy and paste the article in Microsoft Word. I’ll print it next time tapos ipapa-bookbind ko. 😀

Joy, you should download the new WP. It looks more professional than the old version. It’s fun modifying themes especially when you have more time. 🙂

I would love to read more about your LM, Arah. It’s sooo interesting. I might read how it started though, to get a grasp of everything.

    My,
it happens to me too sometimes, when I have way too much time and I do wanna do something with the laptop, but I dont know what else to do. LOL anyway, changing your theme again? hmmm interesting, I have never used WP before, so I have no idea how easy or tough editing and changing templates are. With blogger, it’s not too tough, but I think exporting widgets would be a hassle.

ANyway, are you planning to change your template again now? so, you do have a lot of free time huh? 🙂

Have fun and looking forward to your changes here.

Farah, it’s good that you use Blogger instead of WordPress. I heard that Blogger is better when it comes to free blogging site. You can add any widgets you like, compared to WP.

Yes, I’m getting bored of this theme already. I always feel that to all my themes, heheee. I’m making use of my time now that I’m free from work and school. 🙂

Shanker, my first WP theme on this site is from Sadish, too. He’s good in creating themes. And your landsman, hehee. It’s ok, if you changed so much, as long as you have the credits left in the footer for Sadish.

Yes, I’ve read part of it in my email. I’m one of your feedburner subscriber, you know. 🙂
