Driving A Volvo and A Saab

14 April 2010 By: Marlene34 Comments

Everybody must have heard of these car names, others might have owned an old one or a new model. I don’t own either a Volvo or a Saab car. It so happened that I have driven both of these cars. But before I go any further, let me shout this out so I could feel that I’ve accepted the fact that – I FAILED MY DRIVING TEST! Ack! I did the test a week ago but until now I couldn’t think of ways to get rid of nervousness on my next driving test, which is very soon. It was a darn heart-pounding and terrifying experience, I don’t know I could handle it next time. It’s comforting though that I passed the theory test the same day I did the driving test. That was a nervy feat of me as normally, others would do the tests on separate days. The factors for my failed test could be the car and the place that I haven’t been used to drive.

I drove this Saab 9.5 on my driving test. That was my first time and probably the last time to drive this car.  There was nothing I could do to protest since it’s the Transport Administration’s car for driving test. I was sitting quite low in this car and as hubby would comment on it, Saab cars are made for tall people, lol!  I should have had with me my pillow to sit on instead, if I would have known. I started to get more nervous when I missed the turnoff from the freeway and I happened to run the right tyres on a solid barrier line. So unacceptable mistake. I ran about 70 km/h on a 50 km/h road. Another unforgivable mistake.  Ahaha!  And last but not the least, I almost ran over the curb. The reason for these mistakes was the car that I wasn’t comfortable with from the start.

Saab 9.5

SAAB 9.5 Red

I drive this Volvo V50 in my driving school. I’m also sitting low in this car but not as low as in Saab. I’ve been used to driving this car that I have not done those mistakes I did in my driving test. I was expecting a car like this on the test since most driving schools are having a Volvo V50, if not a Volkswagen Golf. My driving school could actually book the tests for me and let me use their car but they’re not making any move yet so I booked myself. I’m beginning to suspect that they want me to do more driving lessons and pay more. No way!  I have spent much enough and the lessons we’re doing now are all repetitions from what we have started.  I couldn’t use our own car for the test because the Transportation Administration requires a car with dual controls.  Driving schools have this kind of a car for driving lessons.

Fortunately, we managed to rent a car from my old driving school. It will be a Volkswagen Golf. I have driven the car before and kind of used to it. Although I would prefer a Volvo V50 cos it’s the car I’ve used to drive for five months now.  Anyhow, my teory test result is valid only for two months and if I don’t pass the driving test within these months I will be forced to do both again. Dear me! I have known some friends who got their driving license after the third or fourth driving test. Should I do the same doesn’t matter to me as long as I get mine, too.

    HeLLo MarLene,

I didn’t have problem with my driving test. Probably because I am taller than you and the fact that I am a male (sounds stereotyping? Hahaha…just kidding) I know your concern especially when your theory test is only valid for three months. Why not get some practice at home? without anyone noticing you? Bring your hubby along? Hehehe…that’s what i did. I did a self-learning. Of course, I tried to avoid the policemen since I didn’t have driving license.

Looking at the cars you use to drive, no wonder it is difficult for you to pass the test. Those cars are big! We in Malaysia, only use small cars. Our test car is the size of a Mini Austin. Very small. You can google the name of our car to look at the photo. Just type “Perodua Kancil”. That’s why it is easier for us over here to pass the test.

    Okey then. See yeah?

Men always have the advantages to easily get a driving license, hehee. I do practice with hubby as my private instructor as it is not allowed to practice without anyone at my side and I can only practice with him and no other as approved by the Transport Administration. But the thing with nervousness during the test is kind of hard to control.

I will check on that. Thanks!

Try pa rin uli, pero i dont know the process up there… if you are to get license of any driving exams in the PH, you would definitely get one as long as you have the contacts and the PHP….Another “Onli in d pilipins”!

How i wish i could have those cars! sarap siguro i hataw sa SCTEX!

for now, tyaga tyaga lang ako sa oto ko… kahit luma at bulok… 🙂

Napakadali nga kumuha ng driving license diyan sa atin. Fill-up ka lang ng application, darating na license mo. So true, onli in d Pilipins talaga.

Hahaa! If not from my driving school and T-A I wouldn’t have had the chance to drive those cars. Luma na rin ang car namin, hehee.

ganun ba kadali dito? If that’s the case, kukuha na rin ako, kahit wala akong plan mag drive at wala ring ida-drive. Basta may ID lang, hehe. For now, arcade cars lang kaya ng powers ko. 😀

Try again next time. Maybe you’re not comfortable with the car lang talaga. My sister got her license after 2nd or third try yata.

Well, I am a bit surprised to to see that you drive a car this big in your driving school. I think it is a bit difficult foe learners to manage and handle a car of this size. Good to hear that you have rentes a VW Golf…its a hatchback, so handling will be easy.
Here in India, we only use small hatchbacks for learning purpose.
Wishing you luck for your next test. 🙂

Same here, I don’t know why they’re having big cars for learning purposes. VW Golf is a bit smaller than those so I hope it will be fine on my next test.

From you photos, I can make out that for sure saab and volvo are not the type of cars you should go for for the driving test.

learning to drive is quite nerve wracking and daunting. But once you’ve mastered the basics, it will be like riding a bike. choosing a good driving instructor is equally important too.

and always remember, learning to control the car is a lot easier than dealing with fellow drivers while on the road most especially here in Manila. Most of the drivers here are reckless and short tempered.

That’s what I’m afraid of – driving in the Ph. I don’t think I can drive there with the way the other drivers do.
