Citrus Fruits Along The Highway

24 January 2011 By: Marlene20 Comments

One of the fascinating sights that delighted me in Sicily was the abundance of citrus fruits. When we drove to the northern part of Italy a long time ago, I saw hectares of vineyards along the highway. Italy is known for producing exquisite wines, so is Sicily with its distinct wine flavors. Unfortunately, I had not seen a single vineyard in this part of Italy during our entire stay there. Instead, I saw plantations of citrus fruits – oranges, lemons, and clementines. I saw some small lemon trees on pots, too. It was hard to take pictures of the whole wide plantations because they’re mostly situated along the highway where speed driving limit is high. Hubby tried once to slow down when there were no cars behind and that was the only opportunity we could take some pictures of the trees.

It would be easy to pick some if only we could stop but we might face apprehension, I guessed. But who wouldn’t be tempted to pick on the sly especially when there are no fences surrounding the trees. Yay! That would only be me cos the locals have had enough of these fruits.

These lemons were hard to get cos they’re secured by some kind of a chain-link fences. Anyhow, I enjoyed seeing them while the car was running on the highway.

I spotted these trees of clementines and lemons on the roof of a structure connecting to the church in Syracuse. How lovely!

Here are the lemons on the roof that add more yellow along with the clementines. I could gaze at them like I haven’t seen these fruits before, lol!

Oranges in Sicily

I took this pic in haste while hubby slowed down a bit along the highway. These oranges would be perfect as fresh squeezed orange juice!

Here comes another interesting place where they grow oranges. While driving in the city of Syracuse (Siracusa), I saw these slender orange trees in a row on the road. Normally, we see flowers and other colorful blooms to decorate the centre of the road but in Sicily, they decorate the roads with trees of citrus fruits.

Last but not the least, these oranges in the middle of the roundabout when we entered Syracuse. I will definitely miss this yellow-orange sight along the highway.

That is great you were able to see all those beautiful fruit trees. I just recently moved from South Florida and miss seeing all the fruit trees everywhere, in a public square where I lived they even grew pineapples.

Oh, yes, Florida is known for oranges and some tropical fruits. Too bad, you will not be seeing more of these fruits.
