Can Computer Games Affect Studies?
I’m worried about my nephew’s computer habits and how computer games affect his studies. I got a text message from my sister telling me that my nephew got a low grade in his chinese class, probably the result of sitting in front of the computer playing games. His parents were alarmed and they must have grounded him away from his pc by now. I haven’t talked to my sister yet cos I want my advice or suggestions ready when we talk about it.
I’ve discussed this matter with hubby so I could get some advice from him, too. I, myself, have never played any computer games eversince, neither did hubby. Although I remember sneaking time playing solitaire while waiting for my chatmates. But it wasn’t addicting. Anyhow, we’ve come up a decision to tell my sister and her hubby to limit the hours of the kids in using the computer and maybe give them a research study about anything. My brother-in-law mentioned once that he usually give some typing lessons for the kids but it seems not enough.
I’ve researched about how computer games affect studies but what I found was all about violent video games and how they affect the brain’s responses. I don’t think my newphew has come this far in playing computer games that he will turn out to be violent. There is no sign of this kind of behaviour so far. He is still a sweet and charming kid, what he needs is complete guidance both in his study habits and gaming habits.

Yes, too much time in front of the PC playing games can be addictive and detrimental to ones well being. I think limiting his gaming hours sound like a good idea
I used to play PC games till the wee hours of morning myself but then I wasn’t schooling anymore so I guess it was okay but it got to a point where all I wanted to do was play games. It was very bad, luckily I got over that addiction.
Now if only I can do something about my blogging addiction … LOL!

Mhy,
I have handled a study like this before and blogged about it noon pa. While it’s true tumatalas ang isip ng bata dahil may mga skills na nadedevelop sa pagko-computer, nagiging tamad sila sa pagaaral ng leksyon. I hope hindi magkaganyan for a long time ang pamangkin mo dahil merong mga bata namang masipag pa rin sa studies despite the fact na active computer players sila.

Jess, sana naman hindi lumala. Sa ngayon namomonitor na nila ang computer hours ng mga bata at may tutor na rin. Ang hirap kasi sa mga computer games, halos lahat bayolente.

I agree with Jessie..my kids are tough in playing computer games and everyday I give them time to play. Computer games addict like their dad but they are doing well in school. In fact my hubby when he was still in college and high school di kumpleto ang araw pag di nakalaro sa mga arcades but still he manage his schoolarship in Ateneo and still nag eexcel naman. Creative sila talaga in many ways.

My, he’s not just cute, I think he’s handsome! really he is!
ANyway, talking abt PC/ video games, personally, I wouldn’t let my children play any of those when they are still schooling. I have seen a lot of my friends’ children who get addicted to these games and neglect their school work. even if they did their school work, they do it for the sake of finishing them fast so that they could get hooked up to the PC games. I don’t even encourage Play stations. it’s up to the parents, if we give them more entertainment, why would they choose to study?

yes, sometimes parents make mistakes in giving everything the kids want, despite the consequences. Everyone loves their children, but we should also know how to discipline them before it gets too late. Well, i am sure your sister is just loose on this part, but I bet she’s a great mother. Sometimes, parents do that I guess?

Yung sa commercial ng ice cream na nagsasabing “sinong best friend mo doon”? something like that.
I also limit Sean’s computer games. Although most of the games he’s playing are educational naman such as number and memory games. Mukhang may tendency din kasi syang maging addict dito haha! I was once addicted to Tomb Raider kaya! As in inaabot ako madaling araw noong mga panahong yun. Pero di na naman ako pumapasok sa skul nun.

Hehe, Amor, natatawa nga ang kapatid ko kapag kinukuha niya ang card sa school, dahil yung teacher walang puna kundi cute at neat ang palaging sinasabi.
Kailangan talaga ang guidance lang. Mahirap naman kung totally i-prohibit natin. Haa? I can’t believe naging addict ka pala sa Tomb Raider, hehee. Mabuti naman at natigil mo rin.

hhmm… I think it depends on the kid. He should know how to balance studies and play time. My brother and sister are addicted to PC, PSP and GBA games yet they’re still in one of the top students in their class. But you can try and talk to him and give some advice about balancing those two…
